Word & Character Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and estimated reading time as you type.
Useful for more than essays.
Word and character limits show up in school assignments, social posts, ad copy, forms, resumes, articles, and metadata. Reading time is estimated at roughly 200 words per minute.
How the word and character counter works
Words are counted as groups of text separated by whitespace. Characters include letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks, while the no-spaces count removes whitespace.
Sentences are estimated from sentence-ending punctuation such as periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time uses an estimate of about 200 words per minute.
Everything updates as you type or paste. Your text stays in the browser and is not submitted to WhateverTools for counting.
Word count and character count are different limits
A word limit measures how many whitespace-separated words are present. A character limit measures every character in the text and may include spaces and punctuation depending on the form or service you are using.
For example, Hello world contains 2 words, 11 characters including the space, and 10 characters without spaces. Checking both counts is useful when a school assignment has a word limit but an application form or social field has a character limit.
When a live word counter helps
Use it while drafting essays, reports, resumes, cover letters, article summaries, product descriptions, form responses, or any other writing with a length requirement. Because the counts update instantly, you can edit toward a target without repeatedly copying text into another app.
If you need to compare two versions of text after editing, the text diff tool highlights added, removed, and unchanged lines.
