The target riser helps choose a whole number of risers. The calculator then divides the total rise evenly across them.

PLANNING TOOL: Stair geometry is calculated locally in your browser. Building-code requirements vary by location and use; confirm riser, tread, landing, handrail, guard, headroom, and structural requirements with your local code and a qualified professional before building.
FIELD NOTE / 076
A straight stair starts with the total rise.
Divide total floor-to-floor rise by a target riser height, round to a whole number of risers, then divide the total rise evenly. Total run is usually tread depth × number of treads, and the stringer length is the hypotenuse of total rise and total run.
