FIELD NOTE / 027

These are three different ways to describe the same amount.

A decimal shows place value, a fraction shows part of a whole, and a percent shows how many parts out of 100. This converter keeps the three forms side by side and explains the school-method steps used to move between them.

HOW TO CONVERT

Decimal, fraction, and percent conversion rules

Decimal to percent: multiply the decimal by 100 and add the percent sign. For example, 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.

Fraction to decimal: divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625.

Percent to decimal: divide the percent by 100. For example, 42% ÷ 100 = 0.42.

Decimal or percent to fraction: write the value over the correct power of 10 or over 100, then reduce the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Equivalent decimal, fraction, and percent examples

0.375 = 3/8 = 37.5%. Write 0.375 as 375/1000 and reduce by 125 to get 3/8. Multiplying 0.375 by 100 gives 37.5%.

5/8 = 0.625 = 62.5%. Divide 5 by 8 to get 0.625, then multiply the decimal by 100.

42% = 0.42 = 21/50. Divide 42 by 100 for the decimal. Write 42/100 and reduce both numbers by 2 for the fraction.

25% = 0.25 = 1/4. This common conversion is useful for recognizing one quarter in all three forms.

QUICK ANSWERS

Common decimal, fraction, and percent questions

How do you turn a fraction into a percent? Divide the numerator by the denominator, then multiply the decimal result by 100.

How do you turn a percent into a fraction? Put the percent over 100 and reduce it to lowest terms. A percent with decimals can first be scaled so both numerator and denominator are whole numbers.

Does the converter simplify fractions? Yes. The fraction result is reduced to lowest terms automatically. If you only need to reduce an existing fraction, use the fraction simplifier. For percentage calculations such as percent-of or percentage change, use the percentage calculator.
